Who is this course for?

Experienced or newly appointed SENCos:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), (QTLS) or Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS)
  • School staff in the role of SENCo will have completed an induction period

Aspirant SENCos:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), (QTLS) or Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS)
  • Evidence of appropriate experience and support from your school to undertake the qualification
  • Able to meet all NASENCo learning outcomes

NASENCo Tameside 2021/22 Overview

Facilitator: Louise Pennington

Louise is the Professional Development leader for Mathematics and Numicon at Oxford University Press.

She started her career as a primary school teacher before studying for a Master’s Degree in Special and Inclusive Education and becoming a SENCO. Louise was a Local Authority lead maths teacher and specialist teacher for maths difficulties and Dyscalculia; later leading the Local Authority Special Needs Teaching team in Oldham, where she trained and supported teachers, SENCOS and parents, worked with and assessed children and young people, providing specialist advice and training, she also sat on the Local Authority statutory assessment panel.

Louise has worked as a coach for a national not-for-profit organisation that transforms the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people (Achievement for All) and delivered the National Award for SENCOs as a Local Authority partner for a number of years. She is now an associate Tutor for Manchester Metropolitan University and lead marker for them on the NASENCO course and gained the NASENCO award herself during this time.

Louise has spent a number of years working as an independent consultant in the field of SEND and maths difficulties and was a lead Numicon consultant and author prior to her current post at OUP. She co-authored the Numicon Breaking Barriers publication and the Numicon Pupil Books, also contributing activities to the MyMaths online teaching and homework platform. Louise has also had a number of articles focusing on primary mathematics published. Louise is a member of the Joint Primary group for the Mathematical Association and the Association of Teachers of Mathematics and more recently, she has been accepted as a Founding Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching.
